Our Story

When becoming a jockey like his father became out of the question, a fifteen-year-old Gary was desperate to work with horses in whatever way he could, so he embarked on a farriery apprenticeship in Lambourn under master farrier Tony Hailstone.  Working for legendary and exacting trainers like Fulke Walwyn and Stan Mellor was not for the faint-hearted, but Gary completely fell in love with the job and qualified within four years.

Gary worked in Ireland and later Kentucky, alongside Dr Ric Redden – a farriery and vet pioneer – highly respected in his field. Needless to say, Gary learned innovative concepts and techniques from Dr Ric and brought these back to the UK to use in his practice.

Gary’s main passion is working on foals and yearlings with angular limb deformities and remedial shoeing, working alongside many vet practices. He remains one of the Country’s top farriers and is still hugely passionate about the job.

Gary has been an Approved Training Farrier (ATF) for 30 years.  This makes him qualified to train apprentices and he has trained over 70, many of whom have gone on to qualify and run their own successful businesses.

Our farriers combine traditional craftsmanship with the latest advancements in hoof care to ensure your horse receives the best possible treatment. We believe in open communication, listening to your concerns, and working collaboratively to achieve optimal hoof health for your equine. Our friendly team is always ready to answer your questions and provide guidance on any hoof-related matters.

Private Shoeing

We offer trimming and shoeing services at private homes and livery yards across several counties and further afield.  Regular shoeing visits ensure happy horses and ponies, not to mention happy clients!

We will work alongside your vet, when required, to ensure your horse is as comfortable as he/she can be, and always putting their best hoof forward.

Remedial & Correction

Remedial horseshoeing involves applying specialised shoeing techniques and modifications to address existing hoof and limb problems. It typically focuses on correcting imbalances, providing additional support, or managing specific conditions or injuries.

Corrective shoeing focuses on preventing or addressing potential issues before they become problematic. It aims to optimise hoof balance and gait to promote soundness and overall well-being.

Foals and Yearlings

Foals’ hooves grow quickly, so it’s important to have a farrier trim their hooves regularly, starting from around a month old. A proper trim ensures the hooves are correctly maintained and and prevents issues such as uneven wear or imbalances.

If the foal shows signs of hoof imbalances or conformation issues, it may require corrective trimming or the use of specialised shoes. Gary specialises in angular limb deformities and will often start correcting issues from 7 – 9 days of age. At Chapel Forge we are experts in this field and will always recommend the best course of action.

Ponies & Donkeys

Just like horses, ponies and donkeys require regular hoof trimming. Trimming helps maintain proper hoof balance, prevents overgrowth, and minimizes the risk of lameness.

Not all ponies or donkeys require shoes. The need for shoes depends on factors such as the animal’s workload, the type of terrain it traverses, and any specific hoof conditions. Your farrier or veterinarian can determine if shoeing is necessary for your pony or donkey.

Racing Yards & Studs

Racehorses’ feet can undergo significant wear and tear due to the intensity of their training and racing schedules. Regular shoe maintenance is crucial to address any issues that may arise. This includes frequent inspections, re-shoeing as needed, and adjustments to ensure proper fit and balance.

We are experts at assessing any specific hoof or foot issue that may affect a racehorse’s performance, and serve the top racing yards in Lambourn.

Professional Yards

Show jumpers and eventers undergo rigorous training and competition schedules, which can put significant stress on their hooves, so regular shoe maintenance is crucial to address wear and tear. We inspect the hooves regularly, make adjustments as needed, and replace shoes when necessary to ensure optimal performance and hoof health.

Conformation, foot structure, competition surface, and the rider’s preferences all come into play when shoeing sports horses.

FAQs

If you can’t find the information you’re looking for here, don’t hesitate to contact the office with your question and we’ll be happy to provide clarification. We get a lot of queries, and the following are the most common:

How should I prepare for my farrier visit?

Please make sure your horse’s legs are clean and dry prior to your farrier’s arrival.  This ensures we can get straight on with the job.

How often does my horse need to be shod?

Most horses require shoeing somewhere between four to six weeks as their hooves are growing continuously.  Your farrier will advise you as to the best time frame for your horse.

How often should my horse have its feet trimmed?

As with shoeing, we recommend trimming every four to six weeks.

At what age can a foal have its feet trimmed?

Foals’ feet can be trimmed from around a month old.  If they have angular limb deformities they can be started at just eight days old.

How much does it cost to shoe my horse?

Shoeing cost is very much dependant on the size of your horse’s feet and the type of shoes they require.  Please call the office to discuss your requirements and to get a quote.

Can we see the same farrier every time?

Most people prefer to see the same farrier, and this gives them continuity. That way your farrier will get to know your horse’s feet well (and also get to know you!).
